BOOK: NANA'S SILLY GOAT
When Nana brings home four little goats, the
adventures begin! From exploring to adventure, have fun with Nana and her
goat kids as they discover the dangers of not-so-nice neighbors and
predators, sample peanut butter sandwiches and experiment with tractor
driving. All incidents in the story are based on real experiences raising
goats “with a sprinkle of imagination”. Children will relate to the
activities and emotions of the goat kids. This picture book is a
wonderful read-aloud for preschool through primary grade children. Parents
and teachers can introduce children to goats and ranch life, and concepts
such as predator and prey. True facts about goats are also included for
discussion. Readers and listeners can try to sort real from imaginary
events. The text is easily adapted to readers’ theater enactment.
Readability level second to third grade. Young readers will love the
opportunity to read a simple chapter book on their own. Text understanding
is supported by realistic but whimsical illustrations and chapter headings.

BILLY'S GOAT by Cynthia Davidson Bend
Billy’s Goat is a novel for young readers that will charm adults also. Life on the Brock family farm in the 1950’s provides an exciting school for Bill, Jane and Sammy. At the neighboring goat dairy, Bill watches the birth of the kid he longs to have, then gets a job at a horse farm to earn money to buy it. His friend, Doug, rescues his pet blue jay as an egg from a bull snake. For Bill, fun with his kid is shadowed by the sinister neighbor who threatens to butcher Bill’s kid. The excitement in this story hinges on animal behavior. Discover how a trained blue jay can save the lives of both a kid and a boy from the deranged
neighbor.
This is a story modern children need. Tech Tonic, a publication of the Alliance for Childhood, reports that the average American can recognize over a thousand brand names but is unable to identify ten indigenous plants or animals.
